Top 10 Toys for Pet Rabbits

By Lianne McLeod, DVM, About.com

A good selection of toys will keep your rabbit active and prevent boredom, and therefore less likely to become destructive or depressed and overweight. Crumpled up paper, cardboard boxes and toilet paper rolls are a good start, but you should experiment with a variety of toys to find out what is entertaining to your rabbit, and continue to provide new toys or rotate the ones you have.

1. Woven Grass Hide Away Hut

This is sure to be a hit with most rabbits - as a hiding place (for smaller bunnies, anyway) and as a play or chew toy. All natural and safe for chewing (and an additional source of fiber), this toy will likely be used in some way by most rabbits. Measures about 9 by 7 inches.

2. Willow Dumbell

Willow is generally a great chew toy for rabbits, and who could resist this cute little dumbbell for tossing and chewing? It is fashioned from 2 mini balls attached by an organic apple stick (about 7 x 3 inches).

3. Willow Ball

Simple but sure to be a hit. This four inch diameter ball is fashioned out of peeled willow. Great for flinging, pushing and chewing!

4. Dumbbell with Rings

A wooden dumbbell makes a great chew toy, and the addition of two wooden rings makes it even more interesting and entertaining for your rabbit.

5. Rabbit Ring Toss

Cute toy your bunny can chew or toss around: a collection of wooden discs and beads on a circle made of naturatl cotton rope.

6. Activity Zone Play Centers by Timali and Co.

These is the priciest toys on the list but also the most elaborate and are likely to be a long-lasting hit with your bunny. The Activity Zones come in different sizes and feature an array of hanging toys (many replaceable) underneath a sturdy platform. Also see the Small Animal toy section for an array of cute chew toys which are simple, inexpensive, and a hit with lots of bunnies.

7. Critter Cave Chew

A large cardboard tunnel in bright colors. Colorful and safe for chewing, it is made of extra thick cardboard made to last for a while, even with lots of chewing. Like the willow tunnel above, rabbits can run through it, roll it around, or chew on it.

8. Sisal Spider Toy

Jumble of wooden shapes threaded onto sisal; great for chewing, tossing or hanging from the cage.

9. Cottontail Cottage

A three level cardboard climbing toy, this one is decorated to look like a little cottage complete with paned windows. Can also be ordered with an optional ramp that reaches the second level.

10. Maize mat

A 12 inch by 12 inch mat that is completley edible. It is woven from fibrous leaves of corn plants, making a soft mat that will keep your bunnies busy as they chew, scratch, and eventually unravel the mat. However, at this inexpensive price, you won't mind replacing the mat often!
